Maria moest helaas vroegtijdig het toernooi van Moscow verlaten vanwege een blessure aan haar rechtervoet.Ook vorig jaar had Maria op vaderlandse bodem al weinig geluk,toen ze niet verder kwam dan de kwartfinales en had zij haar optreden dit jaar wellicht heel anders voorgesteld.

Hi everyone,
I’m so sorry to say that I have to pull out of the tourney in Moscow. Right after my first round I started to feel slight pain at the top of my right foot and by the time I went to bed I had trouble walking normally.
Yesterday it wasn’t any better, so I stayed in the hotel and got treatment on it throughout the day. I was hoping for it to get slightly better by today but when I got up and walked on it, it was pretty much the same.
Thirty minutes ago I put my tennis shoes on and tried to run around the room, but felt pretty useless. It’s weird how these things just come on out of nowhere, but I guess that’s part of it.
I’m trying not to feel sorry for myself, as there are a lot of other things happening in the world, a lot worse than this. So with that I am going to go to the site right now and do the whole sing and dance of pulling out….seeing the doctor, signing the forms, and buttering up the press.
To all my Russian fans that were expecting to see me today, I am so so sorry and I hope to see everyone really soon! I am hoping to recover by next week’s tournament….which means lots of treatment and ice in the next couple of days. Ciao!

Vanmiddag had Maria in Moscow een zeer moeizame start tegen landgenote Bychkova.Na haar 2e Grand Slam titel was Maria nog niet weer in aktie geweest.In de tweede set kwam ze zelfs op een 5-3 achterstand en leek het erop dat een derde en beslissende set gespeeld moest worden.
Maria vocht zich echter terug in de partij en won 4 games op rij en daarmee ook de 2e set met 7-5.

Vrijdag 13 october speelt Maria in de kwartfinale opnieuw tegen een landgenote,de 19 jarige Anna Chakvetadze ( # 24 WTA ranking ),die de Italiaanse finaliste van vorig jaar Francesca Schiavone uitschakelde.

De als 2e geplaatste Maria heeft in de eerste ronde een bye en speelt woensdag 11 october op central court haar eerste wedstrijd in de tweede ronde tegen haar landgenote,de 21 jarige Ekaterina Bychkova ( # 94 WTA rankinglist ).

Maria kan eventueel in de volgende ronde de finaliste van vorig jaar treffen,de Italiaanse Francesca Schiavone of haar landgenote Anna Chakvetadze,die in de 1e ronde verrassend Dinara Safina uit het toernooi sloeg.

Vorig jaar werd Maria in de kwartfinale van de KREMLIN CUP uitgeschakeld door Dinara Safina.
