Maria’s avontuur in Australie snel voorbij.
Na haar schouderoperatie eind 2008 wil het maar niet lukken met Maria. Zoals een Kim Clijsters bijvoorbeeld na een lange afwezigheid schijnbaar moeiteloos haar oude niveau oppakt, de sterren van de hemel speelt en met sneltreinvaart de top 10 nadert, zo blijft het kwakkelen met Maria.

haar snelle uitschakeling.
Zo ook vandaag, uitgerekend op " BLUE MONDAY " , tegen Maria Kirilenko, de # 59 van de WTA ranking. De verwachtingen waren hoog gespannen, de nieuwe Australian Open outfit van Nike supercool, maar het vertoonde spel van Maria liet nog veel te wensen over.
Zo waren er weer de dubbele fouten op cruciale momenten, de onnodige fouten stonden niet in verhouding tot de winners en het wisselvallige spel van Maria konden de kleine Maria Kirilenko geen moment in verlegenheid brengen.
De eerste set ging via de tiebreak naar Kirilenko en in de 2e set kon Maria haar niveau nog enigszins opvijzelen en met 6-3 winnen.
In de 3e set keek Maria al snel tegen een 5-2 achterstand aan en wist dit verschil niet meer te overbruggen.
Het lijkt wel of Maria Kirilenko zich wil verontschuldigen bij Maria nadat
zij haar uit het AO toernooi heeft geslagen.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN DRAW RELEASED
The draw for the first Grand Slam of the decade at the Australian Open in Melbourne has been released and Maria is seeded #14 and will face Maria Kirilenko in the 1st round. Maria has played Kirilenko 3 times before and leads the series 2-1, the last meeting was in Miami in 2006 which Maria won in 3 sets. This match will be played on Monday.
The 1st seed Maria can meet is #23 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the 3rd round. #2 seed Dinara Safina could be a possible opponent in the 4th round. The 8th seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia is the player seeded to go through to the quarters. In the semis, #3 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, #5 seed Elena Dementieva, #15 seed Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin could be possible opponents in the semis. The Williams sisters round off the draw in the top half.
Maria didn’t play here last year as she was recovering from shoulder surgery but in her last appearance in 2008 she won.
