Charleston, 18 april 2008.

Maria kan morgen haar 21e verjaardag thuis gaan vieren.In Charleston was kwelgeest Serena Williams wederom te sterk voor Maria en won de kwartfinale van de Family Circle Cup in 3 sets.
Maria was in deze wedstrijd zeker niet kansloos en nam in de 1e set een 5-3 voorsprong en kreeg zelfs een breakpoint voor setwinst.
Maar in een sterke fase van Williams kon de Amerikaanse 4 games op rij winnen en daarmee de set met 5-7.
In de 2e set had Maria het initiatief en veroverde een 5-2 voorsprong.Williams wist nog tot 5-4 te verkleinen maar Maria kon de set uiteindelijk toch op eigen service winnen. ( 6-4 )

In de 3e set leek de vechtlust van Maria te zijn verdwenen. Ze kon de eer nog redden door xc3xa9xc3xa9n game te winnen.

18 april 2008: De teleurstelling is van Maria’s gezicht af te lezen na haar
verlies tegen Serena Williams.

"I thought the first two sets were a pretty good quality of tennis.
There were a few key points in the match that could have obviously made the score line a little bit different; when you don’t take your chances against a player like her, it’s difficult to keep that intensity up for three sets.
I gave it all I had in the first two sets, and in the third I think I ran a little bit short."

Charleston, 17 april 2008.

Maria heeft vanmiddag de kwartfinale van het Family Circle Cup toernooi in Charleston bereikt door in 2 sets te winnen van Tatiana Perebiynis.
Haar vrij onbekende tegenstandster had in de 2e ronde verrassend de Spaanse Anabel Medina Garrigues uitgeschakeld en Maria was dus gewaarschuwd.
In de eindfase van de 1e set kon Maria bij de stand 5-5 een beslissende break naar 6-5 maken en daarna de set zelf winnend uitserveren.

In de 2e set brak Maria opnieuw in de 5e game naar 3-2.Daarmee was het verzet van Perebiynis definitief gebroken en kon Maria de set makkelijk in haar voordeel beslissen ( 6-2 )
In de kwartfinale treft Maria nu de als 5e geplaatste Serena Williams.

17 april 2008: Maria wint van Tatiana Perebiynis.

Charleston, 16 april 2008.

Maria heeft de 3e ronde in Charleston bereikt door Bethanie Mattek in 2 sets te verslaan.De # 4 van de wereld was veel te sterk voor de Amerikaanse en het werd dan ook een eenzijdige partij zonder gameverlies voor Maria.

16 april 2008: Maria wint in 2 sets van Bethanie Mattek.

"I played a lot tennis in Amelia last week.
You just try to get the job done out there and do it as fast as you can and hopefully get the ‘W’ and leave.

I was walking around the grounds the other day looking at some of the courts I played on and some of the back courts I played on five years ago and thought how things have changed, for the good."

Charleston, 14 april 2008.

The draw for the tier 1 event at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston has been released and Maria is the #2 seed and has a bye in the 1st round.
In the 2nd round to be played on Wednesday, Maria will play against Bethanie Mattek of the United States.( # 151 WTA ranking )

Maria and Serena Williams sign Family Circle Cup memorabilia on Daniel Island today.

Maria has played Mattek way back at the end of 2002 in the qualifying of a challenger and won in straight sets.
The 1st seed Maria can meet is #14 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain. Maria is seeded to meet #5 seed Serena Williams of the United States in the quarters and #3 seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the semis.

Top seed Jelena Jankovic and #4 seed Elena Dementieva round off the draw in the top half.
Maria has played here once before in 2003 when she was 15 years old and came through qualifying, losing in the 1st round.

Ook vanmiddag in de finale tegen de Slovaakse Dominika Cibulkova begon Maria weer uiterst stroef, maar wist uiteindelijk haar 3e titel van 2008 te veroveren.Het betekende tevens haar 1e titel op een gravel baan in haar carrixc3xa8re
In de 1e set waren 2 dubbele fouten van Maria cruciaal.Het kostte haar 2 games en in de beslissende tiebreak werd een dubbele fout haar bijna opnieuw fataal.

13 april 2008:Maria wint de titel in Amelia Island van Dominika Cibulkova in 2 sets.

De tiebreak begon uiterst merkwaardig, toen Maria dacht meteen een mini break te maken,maar het punt door de umpire aan Cibulkova werd gegeven wegens lichte aanraking van het net door Maria.
Toch won ze de tiebreak en in de 2e set zag je wederom verbetering in het spel van de Russische.
Aan het eind van de set ging het licht voor Cibulkova langzaam maar zeker uit, en won Maria met 6-3 en daarmee de wedstrijd.

xe2x80x9cI was making a few unforced errors in that opening set but I didnxe2x80x99t let that bother me. I still had to go for my shots because thatxe2x80x99s the way I play.
Considering that I donxe2x80x99t play so much on clay and that last year I only played one event going into the French Open, this is definitely a big plus.

Right now the main goal is just to be healthy through this swing of tournaments and be as healthy as I can be with as many matches as I can get under my wing before the French Open.xe2x80x9d

Maria staat morgen in de finale van het Bausch & Lomb Championships toernooi.Helaas moest Lindsay Davenport zich wegens ziekte afmelden en speelt Maria nu in de finale tegen de 19 jarige Slovaakse Dominika Cibulkova ( # 34 WTA rankinglist. )
Cibulkova bereikte de finale door Aliza Cornet uit Frankrijk vandaag in 3 sets te verslaan.
Maria en Dominika Cibulkova speelden nog nooit eerder tegen elkaar.

Amelia Island, 11 april 2008.

Opnieuw moest Maria tot het uiterste gaan om uiteindelijk, onder de brandende zon van Florida de halve finale van Amelia Island te bereiken door de taaie Alona Bondarenko in 3 sets te verslaan.
De slijtageslag duurde 2 uur en 45 minuten en Maria speelde in de 1e set uiterst wisselvallig.
Bondarenko kon in de beslissende tiebreak,nadat Maria hierin verzuimde enkele setpunten te verzilveren, toeslaan en de set winnen.

In de 2e set kwam Maria beter in haar spel,hoewel gravel als ondergrond zeker niet haar favoriet is.Ze wist de set wel te winnen en in de 3e set was er voor Bondarenko geen houden meer aan.Bij vlagen toonde Maria nu haar ware klasse en scoorde in haar beslissende servicegame met een ace het winnende punt voor de 6-2 setwinst.

Mariaxe2x80x99s tegenstander in de halve finale is Lindsay Davenport ( # 30 WTA rankingslist )
Als ze van de Amerikaanse kan winnen zou Maria voor de eerste keer in haar carrixc3xa8re een gravel finale weten te bereiken.

11 april 2008:Opnieuw een uitputtingsslag in Florida,Maria wint uiteindelijk
in 3 sets van Alona Bondarenko

"Considering a couple of those set points I had in the tiebreaker, it should have been over in two sets, I was really tentative when I had those set points.
Somehow I scrambled my way out of it in the second. She looked like she was getting a little tired.

I was pretty impressed with the way I mentally hung in there,I could easily have let it go in the second set with the way I let the first set get away.
I would have loved to have finished this match off as quickly as I can. But I’m here to learn,

I want to get as many matches in as I can before the French."

Amelia Island, 10 april 2008.

Maria toonde vandaag weer eens haar vechtersmentaliteit door in de 3e ronde de Spaanse Medina Garrigues in 3 uur en 27 minuten te verslaan.
Na 2 sets stond er 130 minuten speeltijd op de klokken en hielden beide speelsters elkaar volkomen in evenwicht. ( ieder 83 gescoorde punten )

De 3e set moest de beslissing brengen,waarin de Spaanse een 3-0 voorsprong nam en leken de kansen voor Maria verkeken.
Haar enorme veerkracht en doorzettingsvermogen bracht haar echter terug in de wedstrijd,en won uiteindelijk na een 6-6 tussenstand de beslissende tiebreak met 7-1.

10 april 2008:Maria knokte zich vandaag langs Medina Garrigues in 3 sets.

Amelia Island, 8 april 2008.

Maria has started her 2008 clay season with a win as she advanced to the 3rd round of Amelia Island.
Maria defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-3 in 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Maria broke Zahlavova Strycova to lead 3-1 and again to wrap up the set 6-1.

In the 2nd set Maria was leading 5-2 with 2 breaks of serve, Zahlavova Strycova broke Maria when Maria was serving for the match but Maria regained her composure and broke back to take the set and the match.
In the 3rd round to be played on Thursday, Maria will play Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain ( # 29 WTA rankinglist.)

8 april 2008:Maria wint in 2 sets van Barbora Zahlavova Strycova

Maria after the match:
"Coming into the match I didn’t really don’t know what to expect, because she already had a few matches on clay.

So I was just trying to get used to the atmosphere and court. I haven’t played her since the juniors so I was also getting used to her game and testing some things out.
There is a lot I’d like to improve on but it think it was a good start for me."

AMELIA ISLAND DRAW RELEASED

The draw for the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island has been released and Maria is the top seed a
nd has a bye in the 1st round.
In the 2nd round Maria will play Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic.( # 149 WTA ranking )
Maria has never played Zahlavova Strycova before. This match will be played on Tuesday night. The 1st seed Maria can meet is #16 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain in the 3rd round and #8 seed Dinara Safina of Russia could be a possible opponent in the quarters.
Daniela Hantuchova or Lindsay Davenport could loom in the semis. #2 seed Anna Chakvetadze and #5 seed Patty Schnyder round off the draw in the bottom half.

Amelia Island is a tier 2 played on green clay and Maria is making her debut appearance here and has no points to defend this week.
