Maria kansloos onderuit tegen Venus Williams.
Maria keek dan weliswaar uit naar de ontmoeting met Venus Williams, maar om ook daadwerkelijk de kompetitie aan te gaan met deze top 10 speelster moet Maria nog een lange weg bewandelen.
Vanavond was het spel van Maria in ieder geval dusdanig wisselvallig,dat enige aanspraak op een overwinning totaal niet tot de mogelijkheden behoorde.
Het 1e opslagpercentage lag maar rond de 50% en van de 2e service wist Maria in de hele wedstrijd maar 6 punten te scoren.Tel daar nog eens bij de 8 dubbele fouten en geen enkel gescoorde ace en het verlies in 2 sets is snel verklaard.

Maria met overtuigende zege op Petrova naar kwartfinale Stanford.
Wat was er vanmiddag toch aan de hand met de nr. 10 van de wereld,Nadia Petrova !
De Russische kreeg in de 1e set met 6-1 klop van Maria en wist in de hele 1e set maar 12 punten,inclusief 4 dubbele fouten van Maria zelf, te scoren.
In de 2e set kreeg Maria het even moeilijk in haar eerste servicebeurt,maar had uiteindelijk geen kind aan Petrova en won ook deze set makkelijk met 6-2.

Next up for Sharapova could be No.2 seed Venus Williams, who plays qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva in her second round match on Thursday. Maria Sharapova has won three of her five meetings with Williams, although she lost their last one at Wimbledon two years ago, winning only four games during a 61 63 defeat.
"I’m excited. I’d love to play against her," Maria continued. "It has been a while. It’s always great to be coming back and having a chance to play a player like her, at the top of the game and playing well. I’m looking forward to it."

MARIA SCORES A WIN IN HER STANFORD DEBUT
Maria started her US Open series campaign with a win today as she won her 1st round match in Stanford. Maria defeated Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-4 6-7 6-1 in 2 hours and 28 minutes to bring her lifetime record against Sugiyama to 4-0.
Maria got off to a slow start in the first set as she went down 4-1 but she came storming back to take the next 5 games to take the set 6-4 in 50 minutes.
In the 2nd set, Maria took a 5-2 lead with 2 breaks but dropped the next 4 games but managed to hold to level the set 6-6 for a tie-break. Maria had 2 matchpoints in the tie-break but was unable to convert as she lost the tie-break 8-6.
Maria raced into a 5-1 40-0 lead in the 3rd set and took the match on her 3rd matchpoint.
In the 2nd round to be played on Wednesday or Thursday, Maria will play #5 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia. They have played 7 times before and Maria leads the series 6-1. Maria won the last match at Roland Garros a few months ago on clay.

The draw for Maria’s 1st hardcourt event of 2009 at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford has been released and Maria will face Ai Sugiyama of Japan in the 1st round. This match will be played on Monday night at 19.00 PT.
Maria has played the Japanese player 3 times before and leads the series 3-0. The last meeting was at Wimbledon last year which Maria won in straight sets – they have never played before on hardcourts.
The 1st seed Maria can meet is #5 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia in the 2nd round.
This is Maria’s 1st appearance in Stanford and she has no points to defend next week.
