Wat een boeiende wedstrijd voor een plaats in de kwartfinale moest worden,werd een grote teleurstelling.
Voor de tweede keer in 2007 werd Maria op de pijnbank gelegd door Serena Williams en verloor kansloos in 2 sets.
Pijnlijk verlies tegen Serena Williams
In een wedstrijd die nooit een wedstrijd werd kon Maria geen moment imponeren,worstelde opnieuw met haar service en werd eenvoudig weggetikt door Williams.
Twee dubbele fouten in xc3xa9xc3xa9n game aan het begin van de 2e set leidde tot een vroege break voor Williams en brak daarmee definitief het verzet van Maria.
Williams had maar 58 minuten nodig om deze partij in haar voordeel te beslissen. Setstanden 1-6 1-6.

The two Grand Slam champions played today for the first time since the 2005 Wimbledon semifinals, and Sharapova was slightly less erratic, winning 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open.
The match included 25 double faults, one on a second serve that landed wide of the doubles alley. There were 91 unforced errors and 13 service breaks, resulting in 2 1/2 hours of fitful tennis before a stadium crowd that groaned at the mishits and missed chances.

”I’m a fighter and a big competitor.That’s why I play the sport. I enjoy the battle of it, and a lot of my matches, it depends on who fights more in the end.”
”You know you’re not going to play your best tennis,” ”You’re always going to have to adjust. You definitely can’t get frustrated.”
Maria overcame 13 double faults to exact a measure of revenge from the Williams family. She was drubbed by Serena Williams in the Australian Open final in January.
The result prevented a potential fourth-round showdown between the Williams sisters. It would have been their first meeting since the 2005 U.S. Open.
Williams was unseeded and playing in only her third tournament since July.
”I just struggled with my consistency a little bit,” said Williams, a three-time Key Biscayne champion. ”The rhythm — there were a lot of points where I wasn’t quite there.”
Maria was two points from defeat serving at 4-5 but held, then broke for a 6-5 lead when Williams failed to convert four game points on her serve, committing an error each time. Sharapova hit one last double fault on the first point of the final game but steadied herself and served out the win, helped by four more errors by Williams.

Maria heeft vanmiddag in Miami haar eerste wedstrijd in de 2e ronde gewonnen van Yung-Jan Chan.
Dubbelspecialist Chan vocht in de 7e game van de 2e set voor haar laatste kans om terug te breken naar 4-3 en werd in het zadel geholpen door Maria zelf door met een dubbele fout ( Maria maakte er 8 in deze wedstrijd ) Chan aan een breakpunt te helpen,maar die vervolgens niet wist te verzilveren.
Maria kon daarna makkelijk uitlopen en de wedstrijd uitserveren.

xe2x80x9cI felt like I was in control,xe2x80x9d With the break points she had, I was able to come up with good defensive play. She had me on the run on some of those break points, and I was able to come up with good shots. But it’s the first match.

Wil Maria verder komen in het toernooi dan zal ze zondag 25 maart af moeten rekenen met Venus Williams ( # 39 WTA rankinglist ).Mocht dit lukken dan zal ze waarschijnlijk de volgende ronde stuiten op haar kwelgeest tijdens de finale van de Australian Open,Serena Williams.

A.s. zaterdag,24 MAART treft Maria in de 2e ronde Yung-Jan Chan ( TPE, # 93 WTA rankinglist ).Maria speelt voor het eerst tegen de 17 jarige Chan.
Maria liet vandaag via haar website weten het dit toernooi zonder haar coach Michael Joye te moeten stellen.Hij moet helaas verstek laten gaan wegens een ernstige ziekte van zijn moeder.
