In een teleurstellende finale moest Maria vandaag in de Rod Laver Arena haar meerdere erkennen in Serena Williams.
Maria werd in haar 3e Grand Slam finale totaal overrompeld door de Amerikaanse,die duidelijk op oorlogspad was.
Geholpen door een haperende service van Maria nam ze in de 1e set twee snelle service breaks en won de set met 6-1 Ook de 2e set vertoonde hetzelfde beeld.
Een bittere pil voor Maria,die geen moment in de wedstrijd kon komen,terwijl Williams met keiharde klappen het spel dicteerde.
Opnieuw waren twee breaks in het begin van de 2e set genoeg voor Williams om voor de 3e keer de Australian Open titel te pakken.
Maria wist haar teleurstelling na de wedstrijd echter goed te verbergen en sprak lovende woorden over haar tegenstandster.

"You can never underestimate her as an opponent, and I donxe2x80x99t think many of you expected her to be in the final, but I definitely did.

Yeah, of course. I mean, as much as I can be disappointed about losing a tennis match, I mean, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t like losing. I know you all know that. It’s not fun. You go back in the locker room, like, Darn it, I just lost. Someone is celebrating over there. They’re going to be opening a bottle of champagne.
It’s just — I think these moments make you stronger. Not necessarily now. You know, I always, when I win or lose, I call my mom.
She always tells me, Look, you got a tournament next week. You got to focus on that. You’re going to remember this day in your future, in your career when you’re going to look back and say,this really taught me something. This only made me stronger. This has happened many times.
Unfortunately, it was my mom’s birthday today and I couldn’t win for her.
But, you know, she still made me happy, made me realize this is just another loss.

Eindelijk is het Maria gelukt voor het eerst in haar carrixc3xa8re de finale van de Australian Open te bereiken.. De wedstrijd tegen Kim Clijsters kende een nerveus begin, waarin beide speelsters hun eigen service bij de stand van 4-4 al twee keer hadden ingeleverd.
Maria trok uiteindelijk aan het langste eind en won de 1e set met 6-4.
In het begin van de tweede set brak Maria opnieuw de service van Kim en kwam op een snelle 3-0 voorsprong.
Het was een sterke fase van Maria,waarin ze 6 games op rij won.
Kim Clijsters kreeg echter in de 5e game alle kans om terug te breken.Maria sloeg in deze game maar liefst 4 dubbele fouten maar won uiteindelijk toch en kwam op 4-1.

"I saw those double faults come in at the wrong times. But somehow I managed to fight through and make the first serve when I had to, Maria said. That was the key and is also going to be the key in the final"

Kim Clijsters neemt afscheid van Melbourne
Kim kon bij haar laatste optreden in Melbourne geen moment imponeren met haar 1e service, en verloor tenslotte kansloos met 6-2 de set.
Maria speelt in de finale tegen de ongeplaatste Serena Williams,momenteel de # 81 op de WTA rankinglist en die na veel blessureleed met een opmerkelijke comeback bezig is.
Ze was eerder op de dag ook te sterk voor de Tsjechische Nicole Vaidisova.
Maria is looking forward to a rematch with Williams.
"I’m excited for that. She came into this tournament without any expectations, and she is playing great tennis,"
To be in the final of a Grand Slam, that takes a lot of hard work. She’s won many of these titles — I have a lot to catch up."

Maria en Serena Williams stonden pas vier keer tegenover elkaar. Beiden wonnen twee keer. Maria behaalde de mooiste zege; ze versloeg Williams in 2004 in de finale van Wimbledon.
De finale in Melbourne wordt a.s. zaterdagmiddag 27 januari 01.30 pm (local time) gespeeld.
Voor Europa zaterdag 27 jan. 03.30 am CET !!!!
Maria is officieel na afloop van het toernooi ( wat de uitslag ook is ) de nieuwe nummer xc3xa9xc3xa9n van de wereld.

Maria heeft vandaag voor de 3e keer op rij de halve finale van de AUSTRALIAN OPEN bereikt.
De bizarre wedstrijd tegen Anna Chakvetadze werd in 2 sets door Maria beslist,maar de winst kwam zeer moeizaam tot stand.
Het duel werd gekenmerkt door een groot aantal onnodige fouten en moest Maria in elke set twee breaks toestaan en de nodige breakpoints wegwerken.
De eerste set werd beslist in de tiebreak en bij 5-4 voor Maria in de 2e set had zij alle kansen op eigen service de winst naar zich toe te trekken.
Maar opnieuw sloeg ze op het beslissende moment een dubbele fout wat haar de game
kostte.
Bij 6-5 wist Maria uiteindelijk haar tegenstandster definitief te breken.

"It was very difficult, I didn’t feel like we had a lot of easy rallies," Maria said.
I felt I had to work on every point.
I was a little up and down, a bit scratchy, I am glad I got through, but next time will even be tougher.
Sometimes I feel I donxe2x80x99t know if she knows what shexe2x80x99s doing,
She definitely has a lot of variety. If she wants to step in, she has a lot of power behind her strokes. But over all, at the end of the day, itxe2x80x99s just about who took the chances a little more.xe2x80x9d

Maria heeft vandaag de kwartfinale van de Australian Open bereikt door winst in 2 sets op Vera Zvonereva.
In een zwaar bevochten eerste set,waarin Maria een overvloed aan breakpoints kreeg,maar pas in de 11 game haar 10e breakpoint wist te benutten en een beslissende 6-5 voorsprong nam.
Op eigen service kon Maria vervolgens de set winnend uitspelen.
De 2e set leek aanvankelijk snel beslist door twee vroege breaks van Maria,maar het werd toch nog weer spannend mede door onnodige fouten van Maria zelf, waarvan de taaie Zvonereva kon profiteren.
Bij de stand 5-4 kreeg Zvonereva zelfs 3 breakpoints om op 5-5 te komen, maar wist ze vervolgens niet te benutten.
Maria vocht zich knap terug en brak daarmee definitief de tegenstand van Zvonereva en won de set uiteindelijk met 6-4.

"It was very good to win in two sets today because I’ve had some tough matches against her. I came up with three really good shots to win it at the end here,"

In de kwartfinale treft Maria a.s.woensdag 24 januari opnieuw een landgenote,namelijk Anna Chakvetadze,de # 13 op de WTA rankinglist.
Zij stuurde eerder vandaag toch wel verrassend de als 8e geplaatste Patty Schnyder naar huis.
Maria leidt de onderlinge confrontatie met 2-0,maar Chakvetadze is zeker niet te onderschatten.
Van haar 5 laatst gespeelde toernooien won ze er 3.Maria is dus gewaarschuwd.

Een snelle voorsprong van 2-0 en zelfs kansen op 3-0 waren niet voldoende voor de Italiaanse Tathiana Garbin om Maria te verrassen in de 1e set. Maria kon ondanks haar matige service spel terugkomen tot 3-3 en vervolgens de set uitspelen.
Ook in de 2e set dicteerde Maria met aanvallend spel de wedstrijd en liet haar tegenstandster van zijlijn naar zijlijn rennen.Garbin moest zich beperken tot verdedigen en lijdzaam toezien dat Maria ook de 2e set met 6-1 snel besliste.
Maria treft a.s. maandag 22 januari ( 09.30 am CET ) in de 4e ronde haar landgenote Vera Zvonereva.In de onderlinge head to head confrontatie leidt Maria met 3-2.
De condities in de Rod Laver Arena waren niet bepaald ideaal te noemen. Door de regen buiten was het dak dicht,maar de airconditioning binnen werkte niet en veranderde de arena in een soort sauna.

"I guess I can say I’m still lucky to be in the tournament after my first round,
It is only going to get tougher for me.
Today It was a little steamy in here … humid," I’ve felt cozier in my life.
I thought I was a bit slow in the beginning of the match — didn’t really adjust. I was letting her play her game a little too much.
But I felt like as the match went on, I moved a lot better. I saw the short balls a lot quicker, put pressure on her.xe2x80x9d
Maria said she still had plenty of room for improvement.
"I don’t think I’m (anywhere) as good as I can be playing, I hope that’s yet to come."

Maria heeft zich vandaag goed weten te herstellen van de uitputtingsslag in de eerste ronde. Haar Russische tegenstandster Rodionova werd binnen het uur in twee sets verslaan.( 6-0 en 6-3 )
Net voor de 6-0 in de 1e set koelde Rodionova haar woede op haar racket,dat ze bijna versplinterde.
Het was eigenlijk de enige forehand die echt indruk maakte op Maria.
In de tweede set kreeg Maria nog enigszins tegenstand,maar het was lang niet voldoende om de tweevoudig grandslam winnares in de problemen te brengen. Met 20 winners tegen slechts 2 van Rodionova en 6 aces van Maria was het klassenverschil veel te groot.
Maria over haar openingswedstrijd tegen Pin:
"I’m definitely recovered from it, I feel good physically.
"I just rested a lot, stayed inside, drank and I wanted to finish it in two (sets) today,"
En over haar wedstrijd tegen Rodionova:
I played a little bit better today but still nowhere my top level and I think I can definitely get better as I play more matches here."
"Today I felt like I could work on a few things and really see how I was playing," Maria said.
"I’m glad I got off to a good start and I’m glad I was able to finish the match quickly."

In de zinderende hitte van Melbourne heeft Maria vandaag op miraculeuze wijze haar 1e wedstrijd van de Australian Open overleefd.
In de eerste set leek alles nog normaal ,maar in de tweede set werd alles anders.Maria kreeg last van haar maag en kon geen rally meer winnend afsluiten.
Een hittepauze kwam als geroepen en als herboren begon Maria aan de derde set, nam een snelle zo leek het beslissende 5-0 voorsprong.
Pin vocht zich echter terug in de wedstrijd en kreeg zelfs de gelegenheid bij de stand 6-7 de partij op eigen service te beslissen.
Maria brak echter terug naar 7-7 en won vervolgens haar eigen service.
Door een haperende service van de Franxc3xa7aise in de twee laatste games kon Maria uiteindelijk opnieuw breken en de wedstrijd winnen en zich plaatsen voor de 2e ronde.
Camille Pin zal ze zeker niet snel vergeten !

"It’s inhumanly possible to play three hours in that kind of heat,
I don’t think our bodies were made to do that. I was so delusional I couldn’t think."
Maria said the thought of retiring never crossed her mind.
"I’m not a quitter,"
I’m not just going to
stop because of the heat.
It was one of the toughest matches I’ve played here," Maria said , adding that midway through the second set she started getting "a pinch" in her stomach.
It didn’t happen while I was hitting a stroke and it didn’t feel like a cramp, so I kind of played with it.
It was hard to think about what you were going to do on court.
You were mentally trying to find a way to make the point shorter, to find a way to win,
It was hard for me, it was hard for my opponent."

Maria is ingedeeld in de bovenste helft van het speelschema en treft a.s.dinsdag 16 januari in de 1e ronde de 25 jarige Franxc3xa7aise Camille Pin, prof sinds 1999.
De Franxc3xa7aise behaalde in 2007 haar hoogste WTA notering op # 61.
De overige top tien speelsters in de bovenste helft die Maria eventueel kan treffen zijn Kim Clijsters (4),Martina Hingis (6),Patty Schnyder (8) en Dinara Safina(9).

Maria Sharapova is not concerned by her lack of preparation for the Australian Open after playing just one exhibition tournament ahead of the first grand slam of the year.
The 19-year-old 2006 semi-finalist decided just to participate in the Watsons Water Challenge exhibition in Hong Kong ahead of the Melbourne event, which begins on Monday, while other players have opted to play in the Medibank International.
World number five Kim Clijsters, who beat Sharapova 6-3 7-6 (10-8) in the final of the Watsons Water Challenge, and defending Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo are all stepping up their preparations at the Sydney event which finishes two days before the start of the Open.
But the 2006 US Open champion, whose build-up for last year’s Australian Open were plagued by injury, insists she is happy with her preparation.
Maria:
"Considering last year I didn’t play anything and I didn’t know if I was going to be playing at the Australian Open, and I got to the semi-final, I think it’s been pretty good,"
"I have had one of the best off-seasons training wise I have had in a couple of years.
The last few I have been injured and I have not been able to work on too many things, but I’ve been happy with my off-season this year. "I also never like to play a tournament a week before a grand slam, If you do get to the final of that tournament you basically have to play four or five matches and then in two days you have to play a grand slam which is over a two-week period of seven matches and I don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet.
"Also after the Austrian Open I’m going to Tokyo, that’s another tournament and you are already on the road for five weeks and I think that’s plenty."

Hi everyone!
I hope you all had a great holiday season! I have just finished my 1st event of 2007 in Hong Kong and I am satisfied that I played well there and the 3 matches I played were ideal preparation for Australia.
It really was good being back there after missing last year. It was so cool to see the tournament looking at my top 10 lists and having all my top 10 favorite sweets when I arrived in my hotel room! They were yummy! I am so looking forward to playing in Australia! It really is one of my favorite tournaments and the Australian fans are so supportive and seem to understand tennis better than any other crowd.
There are so many great things about Australia including the people, the weather, restaurants…I could be here all day listing the things I love about Australia! If you are able to, make sure you watch all my matches on tv…if you can’t, you can join other fans in the forum. I am sure you will have seen my partnership with Gatorade and Tropicana.
