Maria withdraws from Rogers Cup with shoulder injury.

Third seed Maria Sharapova announced after her second round win Wednesday that she was withdrawing from the US$1.34 million Rogers Cup with a right shoulder injury. Sharapova defeated Poland’s Marta Domachowska 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in a match that took nearly three hours.

"It’s obviously unfortunate," Maria said. "You know, you try to do every little possible thing you can. But at the end of the day when you go on court and you’re thinking about aggravating things, you’re thinking about an injury, it’s not really the way to play."

Maria had the trainer come out trailing 3-4 in the second set to look at the shoulder, which may have contributed to her committing 17 double faults in the match. Though she eventually lost the second set, Maria won the first four games of the final set to lock up the match. Maria said she considered not coming out for the third set, and she will visit a doctor Thursday for an MRI on the shoulder that’s been bothering her since March when she aggravated it at Indian Wells.

She said her presence at the Olympics and the U.S. Open in the coming weeks will depend largely on the results from Thursday’s tests.
"At the end of the day, it’s tough to go on court and not be close to even 50 per cent," Sharapova said. "I’m too good of a player to go out there and try to fight through something that I think can eventually become something serious."

Maria heeft vanavond in een haast 3 uur durende wedstrijd uiterst moeizaam in drie sets gewonnen van de Poolse Marta Domachowska.( 7-5 5-7 6-2 )
Gedurende de hele wedstrijd sloeg Maria 17 dubbele fouten,waarschijnlijk het gevolg van een pijnlijke schouder.Maria liet zich hieraan in de 2e set behandelen.
Hopelijk is Maria snel en voldoende hersteld,want donderdag 31 juli ( 19.00 uur CET ) wacht haar volgende tegenstandster alweer,de Japanse Ai Sugiyama.In de onderlinge confrontatie leidt Maria met 3-0.

30.07.2008: In haar 1e wedstrijd in Montreal moest Maria zich laten behandelen
aan haar schouder.Hopelijk kan Maria het toernooi vervolgen.

26-07-2008: MONTREAL DRAW RELEASED

The draw for the Rogers Cup in Montreal has been released and Maria is the #3 seed and has a bye in the 1st round. In the 2nd round, Maria will play the winner of the Bethanie Mattek/Marta Domachowska match. Maria has played Domachowska once before in Seoul in 2004 and won in straight sets and leads the series against Mattek 3-0. This match will be played on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The 1st seed Maria can meet is #16 seed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and is seed to meet #6 seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the quarters. Maria is in #2 seed Jelena Jankovic’s half and top seed Ana Ivanovic and #4 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova round off the draw in the top half.

Maria has played the Rogers Cup twice before and her best result was reaching the 3rd round in 2004.
