MARIA DEFEATS WOZNIACKI IN HONG KONG
Hong Kong: 9 January 2010
Maria defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Team Europe at the Hong Kong Tennis Classic in the final to give Team Russia the one point they needed for the win. Maria won 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour and 37 minutes.
In the 1st set that lasted 56 minutes, Wozniacki took a 5-3 lead but Maria saved 2 set-points as she came back to take the next 4 games to take the set 7-5.

Maria took a 4-1 lead in the 2nd set, Wozniacki broke Maria as she took the next 2 games but Maria rebounded to break Wozniacki again and take the next 2 games to seal the win.
Earlier on in the day Yevgeny Kafelnikov gave Team Russia their first point as he defeated Stefan Edberg of Team Europe 7-6 6-4.

Maria had 2 wins out of 2 in Hong Kong as she helped put Team Russia in the final. In Maria’s singles match she defeated Jie Zheng of China 6-7 6-4 6-2 and then later on in the night she teamed up with Yevgeny Kafelnikov and they defeated Ayumi Morita and Paradorn Srichaphan 6-4 7-5.
6 January 2010:Maria defeated Jie Zeng in 3 sets
In Maria’s singles win against Zheng, Maria lost the first set in a tie-break, Maria started to up her level as she took the next 2 sets 6-4 6-2 to clinch victory.
In the final Team Russia will play either Team Americas or Europe.

MARIA WINS IN HUA NIN

Maria defeated Venus Williams of the United States 6-3 6-4 in 1 hour and 23 minutes at the Hua Hin Cenntenial Invitational exhibition in Hua Hin, Thailand in her first match of 2010.

In the hot conditions in Thailand Maria took a 5-1 lead in the 1st set, lost 2 games but took the 1 game she needed to take the 1st set, the 2nd set was a little closer and Maria edged it 6-4.
