Maria meldt zich af voor Gold Coast
MELBOURNE – Maria heeft zich afgemeld voor het eerste tennistoernooi van 2006,het Australische Gold Coast toernooi. De 18-jarige Russin heeft nog te veel last van een schouderblessure. Het openingsevenement van de WTA Tour begint op 2 januari. De afmelding is een tegenvaller in haar voorbereiding op de Australian Open, die half januari op het programma staat. Maria hoopt over drie weken fit genoeg te zijn om aan het eerste grandslamtoernooi van het jaar te kunnen meedoen.

Vandaag is Maria in Japan gearriveerd om daar ter voorbereiding op het Gold Coast toernooi in Australie op 2 jan. 2006 een aantal demonstratie wedstrijden te spelen,te beginnen morgen 21 dec. in Osaka tegen Ai Sugiyama ( # 29 WTA ),een dag later in Nagoya en tenslotte op 23 dec. in Tokyo.

Maria Sharapova and Nikolay Davydenko have been named Russia’s best players in 2005, the country’s tennis federation announced at its annual award gala on Saturday, Reuters reported.
This year, Florida-based Sharapova became the first Russian woman to take the world number one spot and she also reached semi-finals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in addition to winning three WTA singles titles.
The 18-year-old Sharapova, who finished the year as number four in the world, pipped Elena Dementieva as Russia’s top female player while Ukraine-born Davydenko won the men’s award ahead of Igor Andreev and Australian Open champion Marat Safin. Dementieva led Russia to their second consecutive Fed Cup title by beating France in the final at Roland Garros.
She won both of her singles matches against Mary Pierce and Amelie Mauresmo before teaming up with Dinara Safina in the decisive doubles to clinch a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Davydenko has had the best year of his career. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals of a grand slam for the first time at Roland Garros and made the last four at the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. He also led Russia to the Davis Cup semi-finals in the absence of the injured Safin. Andreev won his first ATP titles this year, triumphing in Valencia, Palermo and Moscow, while Safin, troubled by a persistent knee injury, has had a largely disappointing season.
After winning his second Australian Open title in January, Safin has played only one tournament since Wimbledon, losing in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters Series in August. Russia’s Fed Cup side were voted the best team for the second year in a row.

In this profession, like any other, you win some and you lose some. The most important thing is to press on, maintain endurance and a competitive edge, and continue to love what you do. Los Angeles is a city that harbors some of the world’s greatest tennis fans and my time at this year’s WTA Championships is something I won’t forget. I started off second seed in the Green Group along with Lindsay Davenport, Patty Schnyder and Nadia Petrova.
I believe all the women, including myself, played a terrific game and I’m proud that after my wins over Lindsay Davenport and Patty Schnyder I ascended into the semifinals.
I’m thrilled that last month’s photospread in Italian Vogue was such a great success and I enjoyed my time working with the designers and photographers.
Macy’s has begun to sell my fragrance, Maria Sharapova, in their stores and online and there was also so much buzz created by my Pink RAZR phone that Motorola decided to offer it to other celebrities and now to the general public.
It will be nice to have some time off and return home to Florida for a week of training. I’m very excited to see my friends and family back home and looking forward to a relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.

Door een spierverrekking in haar rechterduim moest Maria helaas afzeggen voor het Advanta toernooi in Philadelphia.
Maria : “I am extremely disappointed to have to withdraw from the Advanta Championships because of a right thumb sprain. I was hoping that it would be better by now but unfortunately I am not yet able to play.”
De laatste tijd wordt Maria achtervolgd door blessureleed.Hopelijk is zij volgende week voldoende hersteld om deel te kunnen nemen aan het WTA wereldkampioenschap in L.A.

Maria is vandaag gezakt naar de 3e plaats op de WTA wereldranglijst en voorbij gestreefd door Lindsay Davenport en Kim Clijsters. Davenport won gisteren het toernooi in Zurich terwijl Maria, die vorig jaar nog de finale in Zurich bereikte zich voorbereid op het WTA Masters in Los Angeles begin november en daarom haar punten niet kon verdedigen.
Maria heeft tot nu toe 7 weken totaal op de # 1 WTA ranglijst gestaan.

De teleurstelling is van haar gezicht te lezen.Maria heeft zich terug moeten trekken voor deelname aan het Porsche Tennis Grand Prix toernooi,dat maandag 3 oktober a.s. in Filderstadt van start zal gaan. Maria heeft nog steeds te kampen met een hardnekkige borstspier blessure,die haar sinds het JP Morgan Chase Open begin augustus al parten speelt. Get well soon Maria !

Vandaag is Maria in Zuid Korea gearriveerd om daar a.s. maandag een demonstratie wedstrijd te spelen tegen Venus Williams.Direct daarna vertrekt Maria naar Beijing voor deelname aan het China Open,waar ze het in de 2e ronde moet opnemen tegen Shahar Peer ( ISR- #48 WTA ) De wedstrijd wordt a.s. donderdag 22 sept. gespeeld.

Maria heeft na twee weken opnieuw de # 1 plaats op de WTA wereldranglijst heroverd. Zij verzamelde de afgelopen maanden genoeg punten om nu definitief en met ruime voorsprong de toppositie over te nemen van Lindsay Davenport. Congratulations Maria !

Start van het toernooi in Toronto
Zoals reeds verwacht heeft Maria zich vanwege een borstspier blessure teruggetrokken voor deelname aan dit toernooi.
De als 1e geplaatste Maria werd geadviseerd geen bal meer te slaan voor a.s. woensdag of donderdag.
Als ze voor de US open nog aan een toernooi zal deelnemen is vooralsnog niet bekend.

Maria heeft helaas moeten afzeggen voor het Acura Classic toernooi in San Diego komende week wegens een rugblessure.
Maria: “I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Acura Classic because of a lower back strain,” Maria said. “The Acura Classic is a fantastic event with some of the best fans in the world. That is why it is one of the favorites among players and always has such a great field. I hope to recover as soon as possible and am looking forward to the opportunity to play the Acura Classic next year.”
In de Moscow News stond o.a.:
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams must pay $100,000 penalties for failing to participate in the Acura Classic under a program detailed by Larry Scott, chairman and CEO of the WTA Tour, San Diego Times reported Thursday.
The fees come out of sums the tour contracts to pay players during the tennis season. Maria and Serena, together at the highest level of the tourxe2x80x99s xe2x80x9cgold exempt program,xe2x80x9d were contracted for $600,000. For each tournament to which they have committed that they miss, Maria and Serena are penalized $100,000.
