Opnieuw exit voor Maria 2e ronde Wimbledon.

Maria is er,evenals vorig jaar niet in geslaagd de 3e ronde van Wimbledon te bereiken.De ongeplaatste Gisela Dulko was in 3 sets te sterk.
De Argentijnse had een vliegende start en won de 1e set met 6-2. Ook in het tweede bedrijf nam ze snel een 3-0 voorsprong maar verloor daarna de controle over de wedstrijd en kon Maria zes games op rij winnen.

24 juni 2009:Maria buigt het hoofd na haar nederlaag
vanmiddag tegen de Argentijnse Gisela Dulko.

In een enerverende 3e set,waarin Maria op beslissende momenten op het oog makkelijk te maken punten verspeelde en waarin het gebrek aan wedstrijdritme daarvan een duidelijke oorzaak was,kon Dulko uiteindelijk in de zenuwslopende 10e game toeslaan.
Maria werkte nog wel 4 matchpoints weg maar de vijfde was uiteindelijk wel raak.

Maria in gedachten verzonken.Hoe kan ze het wedstrijdverloop
nog een andere wending geven.

Maria moeizaam naar 2e ronde.

Maria had het vandaag moeilijk in haar openingswedstrijd op Wimbledon tegen de 20 jarige qualifier Viktoriya Kutuzova. Ze kwam zelfs met 2 breaks achter in de eerste set maar wist de set op vechtlust toch in haar voordeel te beslissen.

Ook in de 2e set speelde Maria wisselvallig en verspeelde haar eigen service maar liefst drie keer. Daar tegenover stonden wel vier breaks en een aantal prachtige return winners. Na afloop verklaarde Maria dat ze zich fysiek sterk voelde en geen last meer ondervond van haar schouderblessure.

22 juni 2009.Maria wint haar 1e wedstrijd op Wimbledon

I played against a really solid opponent who went for many shots and who’s aggressive, playing like she didn’t have much to lose.
Her game suits the grass well and she had three good matches in qualifying, so I knew she’d be dangerous. I just hung in there.
There’s still work to be done, but I always feel pretty comfortable on the grass."

Maria wint in twee sets van Viktoriya Kutuzova

London, 21 june 2009.

The draw for Wimbledon has been released and Maria is the #24 seed and will face Viktoriya Kutuzova of the Ukraine in the 1st round on Monday. Maria has never played Kutuzova before.

The 1st seed Maria can meet is #10 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia in the 3rd round and Maria is slated to meet #8 seed Victoria Azarenka of the Belarus in the 4th round. #2 seed Serena Williams of the United States could be waiting in the quarters. Vera Zvonareva or Elena Dementieva could be a possible oppenent in the semis.

Wimbledon is the 3rd Grand Slam of the year and is the only Grand Slam played on grass and ends the very short grass court season. Wimbledon is the only tournament in the world were there is a dress code, all players have to wear white.

Maria made her debut here in 2003 and caused a storm as she reached the 4th round as a wildcard. Maria then won the next year in only her 2nd appearance and since then has 2 semi appearances and a 2nd round showing last year.
